Remember when Ursula said she was "wasted away to practically nothing", what if her gargantuan form during the climax wasn't due to the trident or her own magic, what if that was her REAL size. I can easily see King Triton reducing her to a form that he ASSUMED was harmless at the time he banished her. When she claimed the trident for herself she merely used it's power to restore her true form.
